Answers from our physical therapy team to the questions our patients ask the most.

Physical therapist treating a patient
How soon will I feel better with physical therapy?

Many people notice improvement within the first 2 to 4 weeks. Your progress depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and how consistently you do your home exercises.

Should I use ice or heat?

Ice usually works best during the first 48 to 72 hours after a new injury or flare-up, to calm swelling. Heat helps with stiffness and muscle tension. Use either one for 15 to 20 minutes, always with a cloth between it and your skin.

Is it normal to feel sore after a session?

Mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours is normal, especially when you start a new exercise. Sharp pain, new swelling or pain that keeps getting worse is not normal, so let your therapist know.

Can I exercise if I have back pain?

In most cases, gentle movement like walking helps more than rest. Avoid heavy lifting and any movement that increases your pain, and ask your therapist for a plan that fits your back.

How often should I do my home exercises?

Usually once or twice a day, or exactly as your therapist prescribes. Doing them consistently matters more than doing them hard.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable clothes that let you move freely and give access to the area being treated, plus supportive sneakers.
